Prototype 2 Review
Warning this may contain SPOILERS! I will keep them to a minimum!
Well time to delve into the sandbox world of Prototype 2. It's set in the gore filled city of New York. No bridges to get anywhere, no one comes in (except the military) no one goes out (once again military). So how does this game compare to first I hear you ask. Well it plays pretty much the same, although there are some changes made. New powers! You get to fly/glide instantly. This is all good but I did like the fact you had to earn the gliding ability. The story is just as good, with many twists and turns, but the main protagonist, Heller, isn't as likeable as Mercer. A little bit stereotypical, but maybe that was part of his charm. The gameplay was just brilliant, just a giant gore-fest of brutality! Fun, fun, fun! If you want to slice a person in twine or turn them into a grenade to launch at other enemies this is defiantly the game for you. The new abilities are the tendrils and the bio-bomb. The tendril ability is the best of the two, you can either fire it at your foes, cars and other objects stringing them up to buildings, lampposts and pretty much anything else that's in the way. The other half of this ability is the black hole, where you charge it and hit your enemy, tendrils fly out from that point and grab everything and catapult it back to the centre! Epic. The bio-bomb turns your target into a tendril filled grenade which once again it grabs bits and bobs from about the place pulling them at high speed back at your target! THe one thing i will say gameplay wise is when you hurtle from 100 ft to the ground and land next to amilitary precense they just kinda go, "that was weird!" and go back about their business. Just a little bit unrealistic. |

Sound wise the game is ok, voice acting was good. Heller did get some nice one liners here and there. My favourite being in the final fight scene. “How do you like me now, you emo fuck!” and the good old “Hell fucking yeah!”. The music was lacking, not quite as intense as the gameplay. Mostly the sound held up, was mainly just atmosphere creation which it did aright. This time I will not end with an ending spoiling ending! The end was good, nothing special in my opinion, but feel free to check it out. This game is fun, if your a sandbox fan and like gratuitous violence this is a game for you. |
Graphically this game is not great, it's good, but compared to FMV sequences it feels a bit lacking. That being said, it didn't affect the gameplay. There was one mission where you have to carry canisters about, I started to run up a wall and the canister disappeared! Other than that experienced very few graphical glitches. They pretty much live up to the first game's graphics. Which is a bit lazy, as if they just used the exact same engine in the first. Lame! Actually hold on self. I am being a bit harsh. they have improved the consume and transformations alot, they look a lot more fluid.
Story wise this Prototype 2 holds it's own. Twists and turns everywhere. It starts of with you as a very psychologically disturbed Heller, after the death of his wife and daughter. Getting infected by Mercer, then starting a rampage of death and destruction across all of NY. Pretty normal stuff, a viral outbreak based story. It is nice once again to play and infected character rather than a non-infected again, it gives the feel of very grey areas, where you are not a hero, but then again there aren't any good guys, just bad guys trying to do the right thing for them. |
